NC State set to open conference competition
RALEIGH, N.C. – Following a strong start to the Emily Holsopple era of NC State rifle last weekend, the 13th-ranked Wolfpack will open Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) action this weekend with a matchup against No. 10 Akron.
Â
The contest is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. inside the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range, as Navy will host the event. It will be the first conference match for both teams.
Â
Last weekend, the Pack opened the season with a score of 4658, which was the second-highest score in a season opener in program history, en route to victory against The Citadel.
Â
Senior Claire Spina led NC State in that match with career-highs in all three guns.
She fired the best score of the match in air rifle with a mark of 589 and tallied a 579 in smallbore to compile an 1168 aggregate total.
Â
Last season, Akron made the trip to Raleigh and NC State earned the win by a score of 4656-4642. The Wolfpack also won its last match against the Zips on the road with a narrow 4650-4648 win during the 2016-17 season.
Â
Akron heads into the weekend with 1-1 overall record, falling in their season opener to No. 1 West Virginia before a win last Saturday against John Jay.
