LEXINGTON, Ky. – While the NC State women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss to #16 UCLA Friday in its opening match at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, #9 Claudia Wiktorin & Anna Rogers earned an impressive 6-2 victory over the Bruins' seventh-ranked doubles pairing at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Kentucky
The Wolfpack now takes on #21 Kentucky in the consolation match at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
From the Coach
"Tough opener for us today against a very good and highly motivated UCLA team," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "The doubles was pivotal for us. We started out well, Anna & Claudia picking up another great win. At two and three doubles we put ourselves in a position to win but weren't able to match their intensity in those moments unfortunately which kind of carried over into singles. Moving forward that's something we can control, see every day in practice and have to do better about that translating in pressure situations. Tomorrow will give us another great opportunity against Kentucky, we'll regroup this evening, learn from today's experience and get after it again."
Doubles
Wiktorin & Rogers continued to build their reputation as one of the most effective doubles teams in the country as they overcame #7 Jada Hart & Ena Shibara to begin NC State's afternoon. Bianca Moldovan and Helene Grimme were unable to overcome Ayan Broomfield and Terri Fleming as they suffered a 6-4 loss while Amanda Rebol & Adriana Adriana Reami pushed UCLA's Ayan Broomfield and Terri Fleming to the limit, but fell 7-6 (7-0).
Singles
Playing in her first college tennis match, Helene Grimm fell to #100 Fleming 6-4, 6-1 and while Rogers picked up a doubles victory over #16 Shibahara, she could not do the same in singles as she suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss. Broomfield of UCLA defeated #61 Wiktorin 6-3, 6-3 and after to playing 6-4, 5-2 Reami's match against #119 Hart went unfinished.
