NC State to Compete With Nation’s Best Talent at Metroplex Challenge

RALEIGH, N.C. – On the heels of posting both the highest team score in the EAGL this season and the highest team score by a Wolfpack team in six years, the NC State gymnastics team moves on to face some of the nation's top teams when it takes on #2 LSU, #4 UCLA and #14 Washington Saturday night at the Metroplex Challenge in Dallas, Texas, at 7:45 p.m. (ET) Saturday night.

"The chance to compete on a podium is a great opportunity for both our student-athletes and fans," said head coach Kim Landrus. "I know that our team is excited about traveling to Texas to participate in the Metroplex Challenge. We are thrilled to join Washington, UCLA, and LSU in one of the largest competitions this year. Our goals remain the same; we want to build on the foundation that we have established thus far this season and showcase the gymnastics that we perform every day at practice."
Last Time Out
The Wolfpack hosted Ball State and William & Mary in its home opener on Sat., Jan. 20. The Pack's score of 196.350 topped the Cardinals score of 194.750 and the Tribe's mark of 193.330. NC State not only claimed 18 top-five finishes but also won each event; Chelsea Knight won vault and a beam with scores of 9.900 in both events, Drew Grantham won floor with a mark of 9.875 and Maggie Tamburro won bars thanks to her 9.850. Knight also won the all-around competition as she earned a score of 39.450. NC State's 196.350 was the highest score the team has recorded since Feb. 24, 2012.
Pack in the Polls
NC State is currently ranked #28 in the latest Road to Nationals poll and is the #2 team in the EAGL. While its average team score is 195.008, the Pack's team score of 196.350 earned in its home opener was the highest team score in this conference this season.
Knight Honored by EAGL
After a stellar outing during NC State's home opener, senior Chelsea Knight was unanimously voted EAGL Gymnast of the Week. She earned an all-around total of 39.450 which sits atop the EAGL rankings for highest individual all-around score and is tied for the 11th highest individual all-around score in program history. She earned scores of 9.900 on vault and beam, both Wolfpack individual event high scores and the second highest scores in the EAGL this season, to win both events. She also tied for second on floor thanks to her mark of 9.850 and her 9.800 on bars saw her tie for third.
Scouting LSU
The #2 Tigers currently have an average team score of 197.538 and are ranked inside the top three in all four events. They're currently ranked #2 on floor and bars with averages of 49.383 and 49.458. They are also tied for #2 on beam with a 49.217 average and are ranked third on vault with an average of 49.225.
The Tigers are coming off a 197.450 victory over Alabama on Jan. 20; it was the 26th straight meet they had achieved a mark of at least 197.000.
Scouting UCLA
The Bruins are currently the fourth-ranked team in the nation with a 196.917 average team score; they are ranked #3 on floor with a 49.350 average, #3 on bars with an average mark of 49.308, #5 on beam with a 49.192 average and their 49.067 average on vault has them ranked #8.
Most recently, the Bruins traveled to Tuscon, Ariz., on Jan. 20 and overcame Arizona 197.300-195.750.
Scouting Washington
Currently the #14 team in the nation with a 195.800 average team score, Washington are ranked #9 on floor with an average mark of 49.083, #19 on beam with a 48.858 average, #20 on bars with a 48.875 average and their 48.983 vault average has them ranked #14.
The Huskies are coming off a 96.325-194.850 win over California on Jan. 20.
