RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team kicks off its 2018 dual match campaign Saturday as it hosts a doubleheader inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack is set to match up against Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m. and will face Winthrop at 4 p.m.
Saturday's season opener marks the Wolfpack's first dual matches under the direction of new head coach Kyle Spencer.
"I think the team is really excited to get going," said Spencer. "We've had a really good seven, eight days of practice. After a long practice spell, guys are itching and ready to play. That's where we're at right now. We've got two quality teams coming in, and it's going to be a tough day, but I think we're prepared and excited."
SUCCESSFUL FALL:
NC State saw a successful fall season with Spencer at the helm.
The team made an impressive run at the ITA Carolina Regional. Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden reached the doubles final at the tournament after going 5-1 against a strong field of teams. Ivan Saveljic tallied three singles wins over the course of the tournament to reach the singles Round of 16. Igor Saveljic made the deepest singles run for the Wolfpack, reaching the singles quarterfinal match and taking down a top-30 opponent on the way.
Igor and Ivan also took home two doubles titles during tournament play, ending the fall with an 8-1 doubles mark.

NEW FACES:
The Wolfpack added six freshmen to its roster this season. Four of them – Morgan Lohan, Joseph Schrader, Collin Shick, and Tristan Smith – joined the Wolfpack in the fall. Earlier this week, NC State announced the signing of two additional freshmen – Tadas Babelis and Robert Turzak – who enrolled for the spring semester and will be eligible for 2018 competition.
WOLFPACK IN THE RANKINGS:
Galarneau starts the season ranked 16th in the nation in singles after a record-setting fall campaign. The Wolfpack sophomore became the first NC State men's tennis player to advance to the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships in October 2017.
Galarneau and Ogden were featured in the latest Oracle/ITA doubles rankings, checking in at No. 32 after competing together at the ITA All-American Championships, the ITA Carolina Regional, and the ITA National Fall Championships.
SCOUTING THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS:
Gardner-Webb enters 2018 returning all 10 of its players from last season's roster, including All-Big South Conference honorees Breno Plentz and Maximillian Scholl, who is the team's only ranked player at No. 105. The team ended last season with an 11-13 dual match record and finished second place in its conference, its highest conference finish since moving up to the Division I level.
SERIES HISTORY:
Saturday marks the seventh overall meeting between the Wolfpack and the Runnin' Bulldogs. All seven matches have taken place at home, and NC State has yet to drop a match between the programs, as it owns a 6-0 advantage in the series. The teams last met on Feb. 13, 2016 when the Wolfpack won by a 4-0 decision.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES:
Winthrop comes to Raleigh having finished the 2017 dual season with a final record of 8-12. The Eagles enter Saturday's match with a ranked doubles team of Diego Quiroz and Ruy Teixeira, who sit at No. 42 after two fall tournament titles and a quarterfinals appearance at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships.
SERIES HISTORY:
NC State matches up against Winthrop on Saturday for only the third time. The Wolfpack leads the series 2-0, last beating the Eagles by a 4-0 score on March 7, 2014.
