RALEIGH, N.C. – Former NC State two-time national champion Nick Gwiazdowski will compete for the 125 kg title at the 2017 World Championships in Paris on Friday, August 25.
Â
After a busy summer that saw Gwiazdowski all around the world – with competitions in Las Vegas, New York, Nebraska and Spain – Gwiazdowski has been in Europe since August 12th gearing up for the biggest tournament of the year.
Â
Gwiazdowski's journey to the World Championships started in late April at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas. There he claimed his first U.S. Open title, going a perfect 5-0 and defeating the top-seed Zach Rey in the finals, 3-2.
Â
Â
With his U.S. Open win, Gwiazdowski received a bye into the best-of-three finals at the World Team Trials held on in early June in Lincoln, Neb. Gwiazdowski won two straight bouts to clinch the series, and in the process clinched his first-ever spot on the World Team for the U.S.
Â
In his first bout against former two-time All-American Dom Bradley, ranked No. 3 in the U.S. rankings, Gwiazdowski jumped out to a 5-0 lead and ended up with a 5-1 win. In the second bout later in the night, the score was tied 2-2 late, and when a Bradley challenge for a force out was not overturned, Gwiazdowski secured the final point for the 3-2 win.
Â
During the summer, Gwiazdowski also went undefeated wrestling at the Beat the Streets Benefit and taking first at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Â
In the final ranking prior to the World Championships, Gwiazdowski moved into the Top 20 for the first time this year. The former Wolfpack All-American checks in at No. 16 in the World, according to United World Wrestling.
Â
Gwiazdowski's weight will be contested on the second-to-last day of men's freestyle action, Aug. 25. Matches begin at 4 a.m. eastern time with medal matches scheduled for 1 p.m.
A live stream of the World Championships, as well as brackets for each weight, will be provided to U.S. residents on Trackwrestling.com (subscription required). Viewers can also watch the medal matches live on NBC's Olympic Channel.
