TAIPEI, Taiwan – NC State senior Ryan Held's list of accolades continues to grow, as he was named captain of the USA men's swimming team for the World University Games on Friday.
The Rio 2016 gold medalist will be competing in both the 100 and 50 freestyle events at the games, with the heat and semifinal of the 100 being held on Aug. 23, and the final on Aug. 24. The heat and semifinal of the 50 will occur on Aug. 25, and the final Aug. 26.
"It feels great to be leading these amazing guys and being a part of one of the biggest powerhouse teams in the sport of swimming," said Held. "I'm really excited to see the fast swimming coming up and growing closer to my newly made teammates."
Along with Held, Will Licon, a former member of the men's swimming & diving team at Texas, was also named captain.
Making the honor even more special for Held is that head coach Braden Holloway is a member of the USA coaching staff, and Justin Ress, Hannah Moore, Kayla Brumbaum, Alexia Zevnik and Mackenzie Glover are also all competing in Taiwan.
