RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team has added Kiara Leslie to its roster, ACC Coach of the Year Wes Moore announced Wednesday. Leslie is transferring from the University of Maryland following her graduation this summer and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. She will be immediately eligible to play for the Wolfpack beginning with the 2017-18 season.
Â
A 6-0 guard, Leslie competed for the Terrapins during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons before sitting out the 2016-17 campaign with an injury. Through the first two seasons of her collegiate career, Leslie appeared in 67 games and made seven starts. Maryland posted an impressive 65-7 record during her first two seasons and advanced to the Final Four in 2015.
Â
"Kiara Leslie is a local player from Holly Springs and when we (the coaching staff) arrived a few years ago, she had already committed to Maryland," Moore said. "Even so, we were very aware of her and knew that she was a very talented player. What we're excited about and what she brings to the table for us is that she's a long, athletic guard who can score in a variety of ways. She's a factor on the boards both offensively and defensively, and she's someone who we think could match up well on the defensive end, and then cause matchup problems for other teams because of her versatility on offense."
Â
Leslie averaged 3.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 10.4 minutes per game during her freshman season, following this up with 4.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 11.3 minutes per game as a sophomore. She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016 and has scored in double figures on seven occasions, one of which was a double-double. Leslie recorded a career high of 22 points on Dec. 20 in a 2015 game at Maryland-Eastern Shore and pulled down a career high of 13 rebounds in a contest at Illinois on Dec. 31 of the same season.
Â
Prior to her time with the Terrapins, she was ranked as the No. 52 overall player and the No. 8 guard in the nation by ESPNW. She was named the NCBA District 5 Player of the Year as a junior and NCBA Second Team All-State while at Holly Springs High School. Leslie surpassed 1,000 career points in high school during her junior season.
Â
The daughter of Lisa and Calvin Leslie, Kiara has four brothers: Michael, Janmar, Kevin, and C.J. Her older brother C.J. Leslie played on the men's basketball team at NC State from 2010-13, earning All-ACC honors on three occasions.
