AUSTIN, Texas – Despite a valiant push up the leaderboard early in Wednesday's final round that saw the team within one stroke of fourth place, the NC State men's golf team ultimately placed seventh at the 2017 NCAA Austin Regional. NC State shot its best round of the tournament during its final time through The University of Texas Golf Club, carding a combined 277 (-7) to finish with a three-round score of 864 (+12) and five strokes out of the fifth-place finish required to advance to the NCAA National Championships.
Â
Freshman Benjamin Shipp (67, -4), sophomore Stephen Franken (68, -3), and senior Jacob McBride (69, -2) led the Wolfpack on the final day of action. McBride finished the tournament tied for 10th place at 211 total strokes (-2) while Shipp was not far behind, tying for 20th with his 215 (+2). The senior concludes his Wolfpack career with 39 tournaments played, 111 total rounds completed, 11 top-10 finishes, and 15 top-20 finishes.
The tournament was also the last in the illustrious 46-year career of 2001 Golf Coaches Hall of Fame inductee and 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year Richard Sykes.
