Wolfpack earns first conference sweep in 2017
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team earned a 14-2 win against Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park to complete the series sweep. It is the first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series that the Wolfpack has swept this season.
Â
The Wolfpack improves to 25-20 and 11-13 in ACC play, while the Hokies fall to 20-26 overall and 8-16 in league play. Junior Brian Brown picked up the win for NC State with seven innings pitched to move to 2-1 on the year, while Virginia Tech's Packy Naughton was hit with the loss (2-6).
Â
"I thought our guys played awfully good," said head coach Elliott Avent. Â "Virginia Tech's a good ball club with a lot of power that's among the top of the conference and nation in home runs. They're also one of the best hitting teams in the ACC and I thought our guys really battled today.
Â
"Yesterday's game was one of the toughest games we have played all year. The middle innings of that game were back and forth, Friday we pulled out a great win, and yesterday I said it was a gut check for our team. Overall I think we started really good against Packy Naughton, he's a good pitcher, and I thought we came out ready to play today."
Â
With the win, NC State put the finishing touches on a perfect week as the Pack was 5-0 and outscored opponents, 46-10, during the week. The Wolfpack also compiled a .358 team batting average at the plate and pitchers combined to log a 1.80 ERA.
Â
The Wolfpack pounced on Virginia Tech's starting pitcher early with two runs in the first and six in the second inning to force the Hokies to make a pitching change. Joe Dunand and Evan Mendoza drove in the runs in the first and the Pack collected four hits and drew three walks to highlight the second.
Â
Brad Debo and Dunand drew consecutive RBI walks to push across the first runs of the inning and Josh McLain scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Brett Kinneman had the big hit in the frame with a two RBI double to left center, as NC State extended the advantage to 8-1.
Â
NCSU tacked on three in the fifth, thanks in large part to a two RBI single from Mendoza, and added three more in the seventh. Mendoza hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Stephen Pitarra and McLain scored after a throwing error. Shane Shepard smacked a pinch-hit double off the wall in right center to drive in Dunand as the final run for the Wolfpack to give the squad a 14-1 lead.
Â
Virginia Tech scored a run in the second after an RBI single by Garrett Hudson and Stevie Mengrum hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth.
Â
McLain turned in the first five-hit performance of his career and of the year for the Wolfpack, as he was 5-for-6 in the contest with four runs scored and wasn't retired until his final at-bat. Mendoza was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run, while Debo was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Â
NC State does not have midweek game, as the Wolfpack prepares for final exams. The Wolfpack returns to action against Delaware at home on May 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park.
