ELON, N.C. - Led by Molly Hutchison and Tyler Ross's three-run home runs, the NC State softball team earned a 9-0 victory in five innings over Elon on Wednesday evening at Hunt Softball Park.
In the contest Hutchison broke the program record for career runs batted, now holding 157. This marks the fourth school record she has broken in five days, as she set single game records for home runs (3), RBIs (7) and total bases (13) in Saturday's game at Georgia Tech.
The Wolfpack improves to 15-25 on the season and the Phoenix fall to 20-14.
Rychcik's Review
"I'm really happy with the day. We got some key hits, our defense played really well and Peyton pitched a solid game," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "We only had one tricky inning but we were ready for it. Overall it was just a good day, we came ready to play and it looked like it on the field. It was a good win for us, we'll put in a good practice tomorrow and get ready for Notre Dame this weekend."
Game Rewind
-NC State threatened twice in the top of the first. Ross and Jade Caraway led off with singles, and a double steal with Alyssa Compton at the plate started the first threat. Later in the inning the Pack loaded the bases as Compton reached on a fielder's choice by Elon's shortstop and Cheyenne Balzer drew a two-out walk.
-Caraway and Molly Hutchison led off the third inning with a single to center field and hit-by-pitch, and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Compton. Balzer's bunt single brought Caraway across home plate and Hutchison scored on a fielding error by Elon, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead.
-Hutchison extended her team's lead to five in the fourth with a three-run blast to right center. With two outs on the board Ross reached base on a fielder's choice and Caraway followed with a single up the middle.
-In the fifth, Balzer scored the team's sixth run on an Elon error after leading off the inning with a double down the left field line. Ross tacked on the final three runs of the game with a three-run homer to center field after Martin reached base on an error and Macauley Prickett singled to left field.
Inside The Box Score
-Peyton Silverman picked up the win in the circle, improving her record to 11-14 with her 18th complete game and fourth shutout of the season.
-Caraway led the team at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance and two runs, while Prickett and Balzer each tallied two hits in as many trips to the plate with one run apiece.
