Junior Shane Shepard clubs his second home run of the year
CARY, N.C. – The NC State baseball team was defeated by the Maryland Terrapins, 9-2, Saturday evening at the USA Baseball Complex. The neutral site contest was held in conjunction with the Irish Classic hosted by Notre Dame at the venue.
Â
The Wolfpack moves to 5-5 on the year and the Terps improve to 3-5.
Â
NC State had a tough start to the game, as Wolfpack starting pitcher Cory Wilder did not make it out of the first inning. The leadoff batter for Maryland singled and three walks followed before the Pack had to go to its bullpen.
Â
Austin Staley entered the game and got the first batter he faced to bounce into a fielder's choice. Maryland tried to catch NC State sleeping by attempting to steal third base, but catcher Jack Conley fired a strike to Evan Mendoza at third base, who applied the tag for the out. Staley then picked off the runner on first base to escape the bases loaded jam he inherited with the score 2-0.
Â
Unfortunately, the Wolfpack was not able to capitalize off the momentum. In the third inning, Maryland extended the lead to 3-0 following a solo home run by Marty Costes.
Â
NC State looked to cut into the Maryland lead in the fourth after singles by Brad Debo and Joe Dunand combined with a Terps throwing error to put runners at second and third with one out, but a pair of outs ensued to end the rally.
Â
A two-run homer by Madison Nickens in the fourth inning helped Maryland pull away, 5-0. UM added another run in the fifth after an RBI single.
Â
NC State ended Maryland's shutout bid in the sixth after Will Wilson was hit-by-pitch for the second time on the day and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored later in the inning on an RBI groundout by Debo to make the score 6-1.
Â
Shane Shepard clubbed his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right center, to trim the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the seventh. Maryland got the run back in the bottom of frame and tacked on another to push the score to 8-2. A sacrifice fly in the eighth plated the final run of the game for the Terrapins.
Â
Maryland starting pitcher Taylor Bloom earns the win on seven innings pitched, allowing five hits and two earned runs to go along with five strikeouts.
