
Wolfpack Falls To No. 19/19 Tennessee In First Of Three-Game Series

KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The NC State softball team fell to No. 19/19 Tennessee, 8-3, on Friday evening in its first of a three-game series at the Sherri Parker Lee Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Wolfpack moves to 12-22 (6-3 ACC) and the Volunteers improve to 29-5 (6-3 SEC) on the season.
Game Rewind
-The Volunteers grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the first inning on Megan Geer's grand slam to left field. Back-to-back infield singles and a one-out walk loaded the bases.
-NC State plated two runs in the third inning. Jade Caraway drew a four-pitch walk on loaded bases to bring Brittany Nimmo across home plate for the first run. Nimmo led off the inning with a single through the right field gap, Molly Martin was hit-by-pitch and Tyler Ross hit a one-out single to left field to start the threat.
-Martin tacked on the other run in the frame, scoring on a wild pitch by Caylan Arnold.
-UT extended its lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by Meghan Gregg to center field and a solo home run by Scarlet McSwain to left field.
-The Pack cut the deficit to four in the fifth inning as Martin scored from second base on Ross's double to left center. She led off the side with a single to the shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Macauley Prickett.
-The Vols extended its lead to five in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle to allow McSwain to score after leading off with a two-out double down the left field line.
-Tennessee threatened in the sixth with the bases loaded twice. Harli Hubbard stopped a run from scoring after catching a ball going over her head in the circle and throwing to Molly Hutchison at home, and Alyssa Compton tagged second base on a fielder's choice with two outs to get out of the jam.
-The Pack threatened in the seventh with a runner left on second, as Prickett hit a one-out single to the pitcher and advanced to second on Ross's groundout to first base. A groundout to UT's third baseman sealed the win.
-Peyton Silverman earned the start in the circle, and Hubbard came in to relieve in the sixth inning.
-Ross led the team at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance along with one RBI.
-NC State tallied its 14th double play of the season in the fourth inning. Prickett caught a fly ball and threw it to Cheyenne Balzer at first who threw to Compton at second to tag the runner coming back.
