No. 35 NC State Fights Back for Win Over No. 31 Wake Forest
3/26/2017 4:29:00 PM | Women's Tennis
WINSTON SALEM, N.C.—The No. 35 NC State women's tennis team picked up its second-straight win over a top-30 opponent Sunday, rallying from behind to defeat No. 31 Wake Forest in a 5-2 upset. The win moves the Wolfpack to a 13-7 (3-5 ACC) record while the Demon Deacons fall to a 12-5 (3-3 ACC) record.
"One thing we've been talking about this season is whether we are capable of winning a match if we drop the doubles point," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "I don't think it was our best doubles point, but Wake Forest definitely played aggressive and took it to us early and we just never seemed to get in sync with our doubles.
"Moving into singles, we have to be able to prove that we're able to win a match after dropping doubles, and today we were able to do that. We had a fantastic start on three courts with Claudia, Adriana and Anna and that really set the tone. We were able to turn around an early deficit with Amanda and we took the tie breaker with Bianca.
"We had a little trouble closing it out, but we had just enough at the end and it's really been a great week for the program. We had two fantastic road wins and we're excited to get back to practice and get back home next weekend. It's been a lot of travel the last few weeks and we're looking forward to getting back on the practice courts and getting back to a better routine and build on the work that we've put together so far. Go Pack!"
