WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team opened its spring season on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Wake Forest.
"It was great to play again. With so many players out, either short or long term for the spring, we haven't gotten much bigger than 8-v-8 in training, so it was nice to play a full-sided game – especially against a quality opponent like Wake Forest," Head Coach Tim Santoro said.
Kristina Schuster and Naomi Powell both forced quality saves from Wake Forest's Lindsey Preston in the first half before Taylor Porter scored a header off a Michaella van Maanen cross in the 54th minute to give the Pack a 1-0 lead. Wake Forest equalized in the 82nd minute when a Wake Forest header got past NC State goalkeeper Harley James, who replaced Grayson Cameron in the second half.
"Everyone on the roster got plenty of time today, and while it would've been nice to not concede the tying goal so late and get the win, there is a lot I'll take away from the game," added Santoro.
The Pack will continue its spring season Saturday, March 25 at 5 p.m. against VCU at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
