Gymnastics Qualifies Four for NCAA Gainesville Regional

INDIANAPOLIS – The NC State gymnastics team qualified four competitors and one alternate for the 2017 NCAA Gainesville Regional, as announced Monday afternoon by the NCAA. Chelsea Knight, Paris Phillips, Amanda Fillard and Melissa Brooker qualified in their respective events, and Drew Grantham will serve as an alternate.
Hosted by Florida, the site championship will be held April 1 inside the O'Connell Center with a 4 p.m. start time.
Chelsea Knight earned a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 39.145 in the all-around competition to book her spot in the postseason meet for the second consecutive year. Knight qualified on vault in 2016.
Amanda Fillard is also returning to the regional competition. Fillard went with the team in 2015, and 2017 marks her first time competing as an individual at the event. Fillard set a RQS of 9.855 to qualify on bars.
Phillips and Brooker will make their first trip to regionals. Phillips qualified on vault with a RQS of 9.800. Phillips will additionally serve as an alternate for the floor and all-around competitions. Brooker qualified on bars with a RQS of 9.840.
Grantham posted a RQS of 9.790 to earn her status as an alternate for the beam competition.
NCAA Regional Selection:
The top 36 teams based on their RQS advance to the NCAA Regional competition and are seeded by the league committee. Included in the championship field are also 24 all-around competitors and 48 individual event specialists, all of whom are not on a qualifying team.
Six Regionals consisting of six, teams, four all-arounders and two individual event specialists (not on a qualifying team) will compete at the predetermined campus sites.
NCAA Championship Qualification:
A total of 12 teams and 12 all-around competitors and event specialists will advance to the NCAA Championship. The top two teams and top two all-around competitors from each regional will receive and automatic berth to the national championship. In addition, event winners of each rotation at the six regional sites will advance (in that event only).
