The victory ended Virginia's nine-year streak. Alexia Zevnik was named the ACC's Most Valuable Swimmer after winning all three of her individual events as well as contributing on two relays.Â
Pack in the Polls:
The team was consistently ranked among the top-10 nationally throughout the season, peaking at No. 4. In the latest CSCAA poll, NC State landed at No. 7, leading the ACC.Â
2016 NCAA Championship Recap:
The Wolfpack Women earned their second-highest finish in program history at the 2016 NCAA Championships, taking ninth with 155 points. Over the four-day competition, ten individuals earned 31 All-American honors and broke six school records. The Wolfpack scored points in all five relays, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The Bulldogs of Georgia won the team title, edging out Stanford by just 19 points.Â
Scouting the Competition:
In the most recent CSCAA poll, NC State was ranked as the 7th team in the nation while Stanford, Texas and Cal will enter as the top three seeds. Georgia, Southern Cal and Stanford tied for the most athletes qualified, taking large squads of 14 athletes each. Fellow ACC schools Virginia and Louisville will both be competitive, qualifying eight athletes. Eleven Wolfpack Women were invited to the Championships and will represent NC State in 24 individual swims in 12 different events, as well as all five relays.
The Wolfpack is particularly strong in the backstroke and freestyle events. The team has four swimmers entered in the 50 free including ACC Champion Ky-Lee Perry, four entered in the 100 free and two entered in the 1,650 free. In the backstroke events, ACC MVP Zevnik leads the team's three entries in both the 100 and 200. Despite the team's smaller number of entries in the butterfly and breaststroke events, senior Kayla Brumbaum will look to score big points for the team in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as she is seeded top-11 in both events.
Race Notes:
—NC State will compete with an experienced roster as 9 of 11 qualifiers have already earned All-American honors at previous Championships. This will mark freshmen Ky-Lee Perry's and Mackenzie Glover's first NCAA meet.Â
—Heading into the Championship, the Wolfpack has 11 swims seeded in the top-16, four of which fall into the top-8 of competition.Â
—The Wolfpack holds the fourth-fastest seed times in four of five relays (200, 400 free relays and 200, 400 medley relays).
—Out of 62 teams, NC State qualified the fifth-most athletes.Â
