Wolfpack hits pair of solo home runs in the contest
ELON, N.C. – Despite cold and windy conditions, the NC State baseball team battled for a 6-2 road win at Elon Tuesday afternoon at Latham Park. The Wolfpack scored three runs in the sixth, one in the eighth and one in the ninth to earn the victory.
Â
NC State moves to 9-8 on the year, while Elon falls to 7-10. Senior Joe O'Donnell picked up the win in the contest, his third of the season to improve to 3-0, while redshirt sophomore Austin Staley continued to excel in the closer role, collecting his third save of the year.
Â
Game Recap
Both teams were held at bay through the first four innings, as neither team could capitalize on a scoring opportunity. NC State had runners at second and third with one out in the second, but a pair of strikeouts ensued to end the threat.
Â
Elon loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth, but NC State starting pitcher Christian Demby struck out the next batter swinging. Brock Deatherage then gloved a fly ball in right field and fired a laser to the plate to throw out the runner trying to score on the play to end the inning and escape the jam.
Â
It was the fifth assist of the year by an NC State outfielder and the third of the season for Deatherage.
Â
The Phoenix capitalized on its second opportunity with the bases loaded, as Joe Satterfield lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score the first run of the game in the fifth inning. NC State went to its bullpen next and Joe O'Donnell forced the next batter to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Â
NC State took advantage of a few Elon miscues in the top of the sixth, as the Wolfpack scored three unearned runs thanks to two errors on the Phoenix. Pitcher George Kirby made consecutive throwing errors on ground balls back to the mound, which allowed Evan Mendoza, Brett Kinneman and Brad Debo to score, giving the Wolfpack a 3-1 lead.
Â
Joe Dunand put NC State up 4-1 in the top of the eighth with a solo home run over the left field wall, his team-leading fourth round-tripper of the year. The Phoenix got a run back in the bottom of the frame after a solo homer from Kyle Jackson.
Â
The Wolfpack added two insurance runs in the ninth following a solo blast by Andy Cosgrove to left field, his first in an NC State uniform, and an RBI single by Josh McLain to gain a 6-2 advantage.
Â
Staley was terrific in the bottom of the ninth, as he struck out the side with a pair of swinging strikeouts in addition to a looking strikeout to nail down the save.
