RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team will continue its home stand this weekend with a pair of matches at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Pack will begin the weekend with No. 7 Northwestern Friday at 2 p.m. and then host Minnesota Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Scouting Northwestern:
No. 7 Northwestern comes in with a 9-0 record and posted wins over Harvard and Duke to advance to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships. The Wildcats have shut out five of their last six opponents. Strong Kirchheimer leads the team in singles at No. 25 in the ITA poll. Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba are ranked 53rd in the doubles poll. NC State and Northwestern are tied 4-4 in the overall series history. Northwestern recorded a win at home against the Pack in 2016.
Scouting Minnesota:
Minnesota comes to Raleigh with a 7-0 record, defeating Dartmouth and Penn via 4-3 decisions in their last two matches. Matic Spec and Stefan Milicevic lead the Golden Gophers at No. 51 and No. 113 in the ITA singles poll, respectively. In doubles, Spec and Felix Corwin, are ranked 22nd and are a perfect 6-0 from the No. 1 doubles spot. Minnesota's single's lineup has only dropped four individual matches from the first five singles positions all season. The teams are tied with one win each in the series history. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2001.
Last Time Out:
The Pack's comeback attempt came up short, as No. 12 Oklahoma State snuck past the Wolfpack with a narrow 4-3 victory. Despite falling behind 3-0, the Pack won three-straight singles matches to tie the match before The Cowboys won the final singles match.
Record Watch:
Horton has won at least 20 matches in each of his first three years with the Pack. He's already up to 10th in school history in total singles wins with 73. Horton can move up the ranks in program history this season. His 75th win will move him into a tie for eighth place in all-time singles wins.
Pack In The Polls:
Both Nick Horton and Alexis Galarneau are ranked in the current ITA singles poll. Galarneau shot up from No. 103 to a team-high No. 67 after five-straight victories, including a win over previous No. 30 Lukas Finzelberg. Galarneau won the ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week award after posting the big victory. Horton checks in at No. 68 after picking up two wins from the top singles spot early in the season.
On Form:
Igor Saveljic has played the third position in the Pack's singles lineup and is the only player on the roster to hold an undefeated record this spring. Saveljic is 7-0 during the spring and has won five of his last six matches in straight sets. Saveljic posted a victory over an opponent 918 spots ahead of him in the ITF world rankings in his last match.
Georgiy Malyshev also has a hot hand with six-straight singles wins. Malyshev and Saveljic lead the team with 12 wins each.
