RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 16 NC State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 3 North Carolina Tuesday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. NC State falls to 8-4 (0-2 ACC) while North Carolina moves to 12-1 (1-0 ACC).
UNC opened the match with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The third-ranked duo Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney downed the Pack's top duo No. 22 Martina Frantova and Anna Rogers 6-1. UNC's team of Sara Daavettila and Rachael James-Baker downed Amanda Rebol and Tayla Stenta 6-1 from the third spot to clinch the match.
In singles play, No. 19 Jessie Aney topped Anna Rogers 6-2, 6-2 from No. 3 singles, No. 4 Sara Daavettila defeated Adriana Reami 6-1, 6-3 from No. 3 singles and No. 3 Hayley Carter won at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-2 over No. 30 Martina Frantova to clinch the match.
UNC added a win at No. 6 singles, as Chloe Ouellet-Pizer edged Amanda Rebol 7-5, 7-5. The Pack sent the final two matches to a third-set tiebreaker, but narrowly fell in both. No. 40 Alexa Grahram won 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(10-7) over Bianca Moldovan at No. 4 singles and No. 70 Makenna Jones topped Tayla Stena 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5 singles.
"I give credit to Brian. He's got a great program," head coach Simon Earnshaw said. "They're good for a reason. I don't know whether we took them to the level they can play at, but we were well beaten today. I'm frustrated. I feel like we've made massive improvements in our doubles – you can look at our results up until this point, but it just didn't show today. It didn't show at all and that's incredibly frustrating. We were behind immediately. I thought we gave a reasonable effort in singles. Our experienced players managed to hang around, but we've talked about this is in previous matches - we've got to find a way to convert the close matches and again if you look at the scorebook, we had two matches in 10-pointers and we only won one of the five sets that went 5-5 all. Whether that's at the end of the set or whether we are struggling at 4-3 or 3-3 to build a lead, we've got to look at it again. I've got to find out as a coach how I can help our girls be better in that scenario. I'm not just saying that because UNC is the No. 3 team in the country. We are getting to the point where we can play with these teams. We've got to find a way to beat them."
