Pack Softball Concludes Mary Nutter Classic With Loss To Northwestern

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The NC State softball team fell to Northwestern, 11-2, on Saturday in its final game of the Mary Nutter Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif.
The Wolfpack moves to 3-11 and the Wildcats improve to 2-10 on the season.
Game Rewind
-Northwestern took an early 6-0 lead in the first inning. Sabrina Rabin scored the first run from third base after Krista Williams singled up the right side and Williams plated the second on a Wolfpack error. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam to left field by Anna Peterson.
-NU added three more in the second with three straight doubles, extending its lead to nine. In the bottom of the frame the Pack threatened by loading the bases, as Jessica Moore doubled down the left field line, Alyssa Compton singled down the left side and Brittany Nimmo drew a walk.
-Molly Hutchison put the Pack on the board with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the third. This marked the third of the year for NC State and 35th of her career.
-The Wildcats plated two more in the fourth. With runners on second and third a single to right field by Alcy Bush pushed Brooke Marquez across the plate, while Rabin singled to second base to allow Petersen to score.
-NC State tried to rally in the fifth, as Tyler Ross led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout to first base. A double to right field by Cheyenne Balzer brought Ross home to give her team two runs in the game. Moore advanced Balzer to third with a single to center field, but a groundout to second base ended the game.
On Deck
NC State will travel to Charlotte March 1 for a mid-week tilt. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Phillips Softball Complex.
