No. 16 NC State Falls to No. 17 Duke

RALEIGH—The No. 16 NC State women's tennis team fell to No. 17 Duke on Wednesday night at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center, 5-2. The loss moves the Wolfpack to an 8-3 season record while the Blue Devils advance to a 4-4 record.

For the tenth contest in a row, NC State started the match by taking the doubles point. Amanda Rebol and Tayla Stenta were first to win, winning No. 3 doubles over Harris/Smaller, 6-1. No. 22 Martina Frantova and Anna Rogers continued their undefeated record in No. 1 doubles, defeating Duke's No. 29 Chi/McCarthy, 6-3.
Despite taking an early lead, NC State failed to keep its momentum in singles as Duke earned three consecutive points. No. 20 Meible Chi earned the first win as she took the No. 2 singles over Claudia Wiktorin, 6-2, 6-0. No. 30 Frantova fell to the Blue Devils' Samantha Harris, 6-4, 7-6(2), and Adriana Reami lost to No. 103 Kaitlyn McCarthy, 7-5, 7-5, to extend Duke's lead, 3-1.
Sophomore Rebol kept NC State in the match, beating Rebecca Smaller, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to move the overall score to 2-3, but the Wolfpack was unable to close in No. 3 and 5 singles, as both three-set matches went in Duke's favor. In No. 3 singles, the Blue Devil's No. 38 Chalena Scholl found her team the match-clincher, defeating Rogers 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). Alyssa Smith edged out Bianca Moldovan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in No. 5 singles to end the night, giving Duke a 5-2 win.
Up Next:
NC State will return to action next Tuesday as it hosts No. 3 North Carolina. The match will be played at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center and is set to begin at 3 p.m.
