NC State finishes ahead of two top-17 programs in first tournament of spring season

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The NC State men's golf team recorded a very strong finish at its first tournament of the spring season, tying for third in the challenging 15-team field at the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic.

Led by matching scores of 69 (-3) from Harrison Rhoades and Davis Richards, NC State shot a team score of 284 (-4) on Tuesday. The aforementioned Wolfpack golfers made enormous strides up the leaderboard on the final day, as Rhoades improved from 48th to 29th while Richards improved from 58th to 36th.

Sophomore Stephen Franken was the Wolfpack's top finisher at the tournament, ending tied for 10th in the field of 74 golfers with a three-round score of 214 (-2). This top-10 finish marks the fourth of his career. Freshman Benjamin Shipp (28th) and Rhoades (T29th) also finished within the top 30 of the field.

The tournament field at the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic featured four opponents ranked in the national top 22. No. 22 Clemson took the overall title at 845 (-19) while No. 9 Georgia finished just three strokes ahead of NC State at 856 (-8). The Wolfpack finished 19 strokes ahead of No. 15 Ole Miss and 22 ahead of No. 17 UNC-Chapel Hill.
