NC State Baseball's Pitching Shuts Out Hawai’i in Season Opener, 4-0

HONOLULU – The sixth-ranked NC State baseball team opened the 2017 season with a 4-0 shutout victory against Hawai'i Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium, as three Wolfpack pitchers did not allow an extra-base hit nor a runner to advance past second base.
The last time NC State opened the season with a shutout win was 1973 when the Wolfpack defeated Old Dominion, 1-0. The Pack moves to 1-0 on the season, while Hawai'i falls to 0-1.
Senior left-handed pitcher Sean Adler earned the opening day start following an impressive preseason and delivered a strong outing to pick up his first win in a Wolfpack uniform. He threw five innings, allowing just four hits (all singles) and struck out a batter. It was the longest outing of Adler's collegiate career.
Will Wilson, a freshman from Kings Mountain, N.C., was stellar in his collegiate debut, as he accounted for all four of the Wolfpack's runs. The designated hitter collected three RBI and also scored a run.
Brett Kinneman ignited the NC State offense with a leadoff double in the top of the second. The sophomore ripped the first pitch he saw in 2017 to left field off the base of the wall. Wilson followed with an RBI double to left in his first collegiate at-bat to plate Kinneman from second base to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
A flyout to center field by Shane Shepard allowed Wilson to move over to third base and he scored on Josh McLain's infield single to make it 2-0. Kinneman looked to spark the Wolfpack bats again in the fourth with a leadoff double, but NCSU was unable to plate a run in the frame.
NC State added a few insurance runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 4-0 after Wilson's double to deep right field carried over the Hawai'i fielder's head, allowing Evan Mendoza and Kinneman to score on the play. Mendoza singled to start the inning and Kinneman walked prior to Wilson's at-bat.
Sophomore Austin Staley replaced Adler in the sixth and pitched two innings, fanning a pair of batters and allowing just one hit. Junior college transfer Zach Usselman made his NC State debut and was perfect in two innings of work with a strikeout to close out the win for the Wolfpack.
Quick Hits
- Wilson's 3-for-4 performance led the NC State offense, while Kinneman was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
- Brock Deatherage, Mendoza and McLain each had one hit in the contest.
Game Notes
- NC State won the first-ever meeting between the programs to own a 1-0 lead in the all-time series.
- Adler made just his third collegiate start and his second at NC State, after spending his first two seasons at Southern California.
