NC State begins four-game home stand with one-sided victory over Tulane
December 3, 2017
RALEIGH – A season-high five Wolfpack players scored in double figues as the NC State women's basketball team (7-2) defeated Tulane 79-55 Sunday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum.
Sophomore Aislinn Konig led the Pack, knocking down five threes to score a team-best 19 points and continue a streak of four straight games in which she has hit three or more three-pointers. Chelsea Nelson (16), Kiara Leslie (14), Akela Maize (12), and Lucky Rudd (10) also scored in double figures on an afternoon when NC State shot 27-61 (.443) from the field and hit 10 three-pointers for the second time this season. The Wolfpack also put together a dominating performance inside the paint, outscoring the Green Wave 32-10 in this category.
The Wolfpack once again held a dominant edge in rebounding, grabbing 42 rebounds compared to just 24 by the Green Wave. NC State collected 20 offensive rebounds during the contest and has yet to be out-rebounded by an opponent in nine games this season.
Tulane's Kolby Morgan led all scorers with 20 points on 6-13 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 10 points from teammate Harlyn Wyatt.
"It was good to see the ball go through the hole a few times," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "We've struggled at times to do that, so I thought we did a nice job of attacking the zone after our performance at Rutgers. I felt like we might see some zone. We did a good job of attacking it, especially getting to the offensive boards. That's the thing about a zone. It's hard to box out sometimes, so I thought we did a great job there. It also helps when you're knocking down threes at a forty percent rate. It was good to see that happen. We did a great job on the boards for the most part on both ends, and I think that was a big part of the win. We knew they'd press some. We handled that fairly decently for the most part. It was a good all-around performance; it was a good win. Especially since you don't play for a week now, it's kind of nice to take the break with a good taste in your mouth."
Leslie came out strong in her first start for the Wolfpack, scoring nine of NC State's first 17 points. In 32 minutes of play, she led the team with nine rebounds, five of those coming off of the offensive glass.
After taking a 12-point lead into the half, NC State dominated the third quarter. The team shot a collective 9-16 (.563) from the field to double its lead to 24 points (62-38) and put the game out of reach heading into the final period of competition.
NC State will take a few days away from competition during the university's final exam week and will be back in Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 10 when it plays host to Georgetown. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
