NC State has not lost a rebounding contest through 10 games this season
December 10, 2017
RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team (8-2) never trailed Sunday afternoon en route to earning a 63-49 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas to improve to 6-0 at home this season.
The Wolfpack dominated the game down low, outscoring the Hoyas 30-14 inside the paint and earning a 50-30 rebounding edge. NC State began the contest at a blistering clip of 10-12 (.833) from the field, taking a 23-8 lead just 7:17 into the contest and never looking back.
Kiara Leslie and Aislinn Konig led all scorers with 16 points. Konig went 4-11 from distance, making Sunday the fifth consecutive game during which she has hit at least three three-pointers. Akela Maize (13 points) and Chelsea Nelson (10) joined Leslie and Konig in double figures. Sophomore Erika Cassell had a very efficient afternoon during her 16 minutes on the court, collecting a game and career high 11 rebounds.
Cynthia Petke (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Mikayla Venson (14 points) led the offense for the Hoyas. NC State was able to hold leading scorer Dionna White (18.3 points per game this season) to nine points on 4-15 shooting from the field.
"I thought we came out great today," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "We had a lot of focus. I think you sometimes worry about this time of year with final exams and everything. We showed some energy, and I liked the way we came out. We were knocking shots down, and sometimes that gives you an extra boost. But then the shots stopped falling, we had a few turnovers, and Georgetown did a great job of getting back into the game."
Looking up at a 35-21 deficit, Georgetown (4-5) scored the first nine points of the third quarter to pull within five (35-30) just 3:11 into the second half. The Wolfpack regrouped and answered the challenge, scoring the final 13 points of the quarter to take a 48-30 advantage into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Georgetown clipped NC State's lead to 11 points (53-42) when Venson hit a jumper with 3:59 remaining in the contest, but the Wolfpack again generated sufficient breathing room, extending its lead to 20 points (62-42) with 85 seconds to play, effectively putting the game well out of reach.
NC State concludes its second four-game home stand of the season this upcoming week with visits from East Tennessee State (Thursday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.) and Elon (Saturday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m.). Both games will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
