December 14, 2017
RALEIGH – In only the second meeting between the two programs, the NC State women's basketball team downed the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 70-58 Thursday night in the team's 450th win in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack improved to 9-2 on the season with the win and remains a perfect 7-0 when playing on its home court.
Lucky Rudd came off the bench and posted a team-high 12 points. Aislinn Konig knocked down three three-pointers for the sixth game in a row on her way to totaling 11 points, and Chelsea Nelson added 11 of her own, her 10th time in 11 games scoring in double figures. Erika Cassell joined them as she put up the first double-digit scoring performance of her career with 10 points.
Nelson also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.
ETSU's Britney Snowden led all players with 15 points on 5-10 shooting. She was joined in double figures by teammates Jada Craig (14) and Tianna Tarter (12). Sadasia Tipps pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in just 20 minutes of game action.
For just the first time in its first 11 games, NC State, which came into the contest ranked fifth nationally with +14.4 rebounding margin, found itself narrowly out-rebounded by its opponent. ETSU snagged 46 off of the glass compared to the Wolfpack's 44.
After scoring the game's first basket, ETSU held an early 3-1 advantage before the Wolfpack went on a 9-0 run to take a 10-3 lead. NC State's solid defensive pressure held the Bucs to 5-31 (.161) shooting in the first half as the Wolfpack took a 32-18 lead into the break.
NC State extended its advantage to 16 points (37-21) just 2:23 into the third quarter, but the Buccaneers fought back. The visitors would trim the Wolfpack lead to single digits (39-30 with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter) and scored the final basket of the period as time expired to remain within 10 points at 49-39.
ETSU (6-6) trimmed NC State's lead to four points (54-50) with 5:47 remaining in the game, but the Wolfpack was very composed down the stretch. Over the course of the final five-and-a-half minutes, the Wolfpack went 9-10 from the free throw line and outscored the Bucs 16-8 to close out the victory.
"It was a win, but I have higher expectations for this team than what we saw tonight," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference.
NC State will finish its home stand this weekend as it hosts Elon on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum, with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
