CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite poised offensive and defensive performance by the Wolfpack, the No. 24 NC State women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 result with No. 4 UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday evening in the ACC Championship semifinal at MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston, S.C. The Wolfpack moves to 14-5-1 on the season while the Tar Heels improve to 14-2-2.
COACH SANTORO'S TAKE
Thoughts on performance
"It was an even game and in these kinds of games it takes an individual moment by a good player," said head coach Tim Santoro. "It was a good goal and that was the difference. It was disappointing but we're fully prepared for the NCAA Tournament and we're looking forward to it."
On playing style against UNC-CH
"We didn't change anything. It was a tough game and we thought one goal was going to decide it. We just couldn't find the tying goal. We liked how the game went but just couldn't find the equalizer."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolfpack put together a strong defensive performance in the opening half of the match, as the Tar Heels had just one shot on goal and had another quality opportunity that hit the crossbar. Sydney Wootten was tested early in the match with a long shot by Zoe Redei to the near left post but easily handed it.
Kia Rankin found a scoring opportunity in the 42nd minute on a pass by Lulu Guttenberger to just above the penalty box, but the ball was deflected off of UNC's goalkeeper.
In the 56th minute UNC's Alessia Russo scored the game-winner on an unassisted effort, as she made a strike from 25 yards that found the upper right corner of the net.
The team's other opportunities came in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Paige Griffiths made a great strike on goal from 10 yards in the 72nd minute that was saved, and Cailyn Boch had a header in the 88th minute off of a Hannah Keogh corner kick but missed wide left.
UP NEXT
The Pack will await its fate for the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be Nov. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
