NORFOLK, Va. – For the fifth time during head coach Wes Moore's tenure at NC State, the Wolfpack (5-0) is on a five-game winning streak following a 73-56 victory at Old Dominion Monday evening inside the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
Redshirt sophomore Kaila Ealey authored a terrific performance, narrowly missing the third triple-double in program history with 12 rebounds, nine assists, and eight points. Senior Chelsea Nelson led all scorers with 17 points on 8-12 shooting while Kiara Leslie (15) and Lucky Rudd (10) joined her in double figures.
The teams were tied 36-36 at halftime, but NC State used an unbelievable third quarter to take control of the contest once and for all. NC State outscored Old Dominion 19-3 during the third quarter, going 7-12 (.583) from the field while limiting the Monarchs to a success rate of 1-14 (.071).
"We have a lot of things to get better at, but 20 assists against 11 turnovers, outrebounding them (ODU) 41-23, taking care of the ball and controlling the boards, our kids did that tonight," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame radio interview with Chris Hooks. "That's a good start."
Victoria Morris and Kelly Loftus each scored 15 points for Old Dominion while teammate Odegua Oigbokie scored 10. Loftus caught fire in the second quarter, almost singlehandedly engineering an early Monarchs comeback with all of her points coming on 5-5 shooting from beyond the arc during the second frame.
NC State dominated the Monarchs in the first quarter, ending the final 6:16 on an 18-4 run to take a 23-9 lead at the conclusion of the first 10 minutes. Old Dominion completely flipped the script in the second quarter, sinking six three-pointers to outscore the Wolfpack 27-13 and knot the game at 36 points apiece heading into the halftime break. As a team, Old Dominion shot 9-13 (.692) from the field in the second quarter and 6-7 (.857) from distance.
Ealey particularly shone during the third quarter, scoring five points and collecting seven rebounds in just 10 minutes.
"Twelve rebounds out of probably the smallest player on the court," Moore said. "She has a big heart. She finds a way to weave through the traffic and she goes and gets it with two hands. So many players want to hold off a player with one and tip it with one, but she goes up and gets it."
NC State now heads south to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to compete in the relocated Puerto Rico Clasico. The Wolfpack will play Alabama (Nov. 23) and South Dakota State (Nov. 24). Both games will tip off at 2:30 p.m. from Cardinal Gibbons Arena.
