NC State collects 63 rebounds in victory over South Alabama
November 17, 2017
RALEIGH – Senior Chelsea Nelson and redshirt junior Kiara Leslie each put up double-double performances to lead the NC State women's basketball team to a 71-50 victory over South Alabama on Friday night inside Reynolds Coliseum. With the win, the Wolfpack is off to its seventh consecutive 4-0 start to a season.
Sophomore Aislinn Konig joined Nelson (10) and Leslie (10) in double figures. She was NC State's leading scorer on the night, tallying 13 points on the way to her second double-digit scoring performance in a row. The Wolfpack guard shot 3-7 (.429) from behind the three-point line in addition to dishing out a team-high four assists.
The Wolfpack outrebounded the Jaguars 63-36. The team was especially active on the offensive boards, snagging 29 compared to the Jaguars' 14. Leslie led all players with 12 total rebounds, an impressive seven of those being offensive, and Nelson added 10 of her own.
Chyna Ellis led the Jaguars and tied Konig's game-high with 13 points. She also collected a team-high seven rebounds. Teammate Savannah Jones joined her in double figures with 12 points.
NC State's streak of never trailing in a game this season was broken in the first quarter when South Alabama moved out to a 3-1 and then eventually an 8-3 lead. The first quarter was an exciting, back-and-forth 10 minutes that featured all four lead changes and all three ties of the game. On a free throw by Erika Cassell with 41 seconds remaining in the quarter, the Wolfpack took a 17-16 lead and never again looked back.
NC State heads to Norfolk, Va., on Nov. 20 to face Old Dominion for the squad's first road trip of the season. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. from the Ted Constant Convocation Center and will be broadcast on WatchESPN. NC State will then travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to compete in the relocated Puerto Rico Clasico. At the competition, NC State will take on Alabama (Nov. 23) and South Dakota State (Nov. 24).
