RALEIGH – The No. 21 NC State women's soccer team put together a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA First Round, as the Wolfpack defeated Arkansas 4-1 at Dail Soccer Stadium.
This is the 10th time in program history and second year in a row that the Pack has advanced out of the NCAA First Round. NC State improves to 15-5-1 on the year and will face Princeton in the NCAA Second Round Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Razorbacks end their season with an 11-11-2 record.
HIGHLIGHTS
COACH SANTORO'S TAKE
Thoughts on the match
"We were opportunistic. I didn't think we played too well today though," said head coach Santoro. "We were sloppy in our build up, we allowed all their long throws to be more of a problem than it should have been. We know it was coming but just didn't deal with it well enough, but I guess that's a sign of a good team to not be pleased after winning 4-1 against a team that just lost in the SEC final."
Thoughts on Tziarra King
"She's been on her game since August 1. She's a special individual player, she plays well within the team concept but can really do some stuff individually and create off the dribble that's pretty special."
On Lulu Guttenberger's performance in backfield
"I thought Lulu was our best player today. She's as good as any center back as I've seen all year. She's really adapted to the American and college game well. She really stabilizes the back line and is a big part of what we do back there."
On rematch with Princeton
"They're a good team. It's weird to get a team again that you lost to. They had a pretty convincing performance last night so it'll be a battle on Friday but one we'll be looking forward to trying to revenge."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tziarra King quickly put the Pack on the board with a goal on the sixth minute on a double assist by Maxine Blackwood and Rachel Cox. She made a strike from the top of the penalty box to the middle of the net.
King doubled her team's score in the 50th minute thanks to a double assist from Hannah Keogh and Blackwood when her shot from 18 yards landed in the bottom right corner of the net. The sophomore midfielder now holds 16 goals on the season, which ties for sixth in the all-time record book for most in a single season.
Paige Griffiths recorded her third tally of the season in the 63rd minute with a low shot from just above the six-yard box on Keogh's assist that finished inside the right corner of the net. Rankin added the team's fourth goal in the 78th minute with a strike that hit the left post and went into the net on a Mikahil Johnson assist.
Keogh has worked her way into NC State's record book as her 10 assists this year rank sixth for most in a single season in 10th for most in a career.
In the 81st minute the Razorbacks' Stefani Doyle scored her fifth goal of the season on a fast break as her shot finished inside the far right post.
Arkansas outshot the Pack 14-11, but nine of NC State's shots were on goal compared to just four of the Razorbacks'. Sydney Wootten earned her 12th win of the season in goal, playing all 90 minutes and tallying three saves.
