Â
TULSA, Okla. – Alexis Galarneau made program history on Saturday becoming the first NC State men's tennis player to advance past the Round of 16 at the Saint Francis ITA All-American Tennis Championships.
The Wolfpack sophomore defeated No. 104 Alex Lebedev in the Round of 16 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals and came just short of a semifinals berth, falling to 2016-17 NCAA finalist No. 5 William Blumberg.
"I'm proud of Alexis because not only did he advance to the final eight, he also implemented a lot of stuff we've been working this fall," said assistant coach Cris James. "He showed he can be among the nation's elite players already, and there are still plenty of areas for improvement. We'll be excited to get back on the practice court and in the gym this week to get better."
Â
In the Round of 16, 43rd-ranked Galarneau faced an ACC opponent in Notre Dame's Lebedev. He made quick work of the Fighting Irish senior, winning 6-3, 6-3 to move on to face UNC's William Blumberg in the quarterfinals.
Â
Galarneau's straight-sets victory over Lebedev also gave him an automatic entry into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be played Nov. 1-5 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
Â
Galarneau had a quick turnaround, facing Blumberg in the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon. He battled against the Tar Heel sophomore but fell 6-4, 6-4 to end his run at the tournament.Â
