TULSA, Okla. – NC State men's tennis sophomore Alexis Galarneau advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday.
Galarneau opened his season with a singles win Thursday, and he continued his success with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tulsa's Majed Kilani on the second day of the tournament. He broke Kilani's serve six times over the course of the match and used his own strong service game to continue putting pressure on the Tulsa junior.
"Alexis did a good job sustaining throughout the match," said assistant coach Cris James. "It's a good quality to have, to be able to sustain pressure on the other guy and not give him a lot of openings. I'm very happy with that."
Galarneau and junior Michael Ogden paired up to play in the consolation doubles draw, taking on 29th-ranked Christopher Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn in a tight match. The Louisville duo won the first set 6-4 and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Down 5-1, Galarneau and Ogden battled back to win five straight games, including three service games and two breaks, to put the score at 6-5 in favor of the Wolfpack. The second set extended into a tiebreaker, which Kougoucheff and Wynn hung on to win 7-1.
"You have to give credit to Louisville for how well they played," said James. "I'm also proud of our guys for battling back. We found a way to creep back into the match and give ourselves a chance to win it. Alexis and Michael did a lot to better themselves from yesterday's match, so I'm happy about that."
UP NEXT:
Galarneau continues singles play on Saturday with a match against No. 104 Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame in the Round of 16. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. The quarterfinals will also be played Saturday, should Galarneau advance past Lebedev.
