TULSA, Okla. – Alexis Galarneau advanced to the second round of the singles draw at the ITA All-American Championships Thursday in Tulsa, Okla. Galarneau will compete in the second round of the singles draw on Friday.
Galarneau started his 2017-18 campaign on a strong note with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) singles victory over Georgia's No. 21 Wayne Montgomery.
"I'm happy for Alexis with a good win," said assistant coach Cris James, who traveled with the players to Tulsa. "I saw him implement some of the things we have been working on in his game, which was great."
The Wolfpack sophomore took early control of the match with two breaks to start, and he broke Montgomery a third time a few games later to win the first set. The second set was a tighter battle that ultimately went into a tiebreaker. Galarneau kept his cool to fight off a set point for Montgomery and went on to win the last three points of the tiebreaker to take the match.
"Alexis competed with good composure today," said James. "There were a lot of moments in the second set where the momentum could have flipped, but he did a great job of responding each time."
In doubles, 14th-ranked Galarneau and Ogden fell to the fifth-ranked duo of Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez of Florida 6-2, 6-4.
UP NEXT:
Galarneau's win advanced him to the second round of the singles main draw where he will face Tulsa's Majed Kilani.
Galarneau and Ogden will play in the consolation doubles draw of 16 teams.
The quarterfinalists in the singles draw and the finalists in the consolation doubles draw will advance to the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. in November.
