Wolfpack joins Penn State as nation’s only two teams with three 1,000-kill players
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Despite NC State's Julia Brown breaking the rally-scoring era program record for career kills and Kaitlyn Kearney reaching 1,000 career kills, the Wolfpack was unable to pick up its 10th Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) win as Miami earned a 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-21) victory Friday night inside Knight Sports Complex.
After earning the program's first-ever win in Coral Gables in head coach Linda Hampton-Keith's first trip, NC State was not able to replicate the results of its match from last season.
The Wolfpack falls to 14-8 overall and 9-2 in ACC play, while the Hurricanes move to 13-4 and 7-4 in conference action. It was just the third time that NC State has been swept this season and first in conference play since Nov. 16, 2016, a span of 13 matches.
Worth Noting
- Brown entered the match with 1,176 career kills and need just three to set the rally-scoring era program record. She achieved the mark with her third kill of the night in the opening set.
- Kearney becomes the third player on the NC State roster with at least 1,000 career kills, as the Wolfpack and top-ranked Penn State are the only two teams in the nation to have three players with 1,000 or more kills.
- The Frisco, Texas, native also is the first player in program history with 1,000 career kills and 500 career blocks – one of four players in the NCAA with the distinction.
- NC State's seven service aces in the match tie as a season high and are the most in an ACC match this season.
Quoting Hampton-Keith
Overall thoughts…
"Tonight was a night of missed opportunities," said Hampton-Keith. "Credit to Miami for playing relentless defense and putting a lot of pressure on our offense. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalize on the opportunities we did have and that was the difference in each set."
Match Rewind
- The opening frame was tightly contested, featuring 15 ties and five lead changes.
- Miami tried to pull away with a 4-1 run to take a 12-8 lead, but NC State countered by winning five of the next six rallies to even the score at 13-13.
- The Wolfpack took a 23-21 advantage following three unanswered points; however, the Hurricanes responded equally and went on to win the first set, 27-25.
- The second set was similar to the first, as the teams were within a few points throughout the set.
- With Miami leading 20-15, NC State went on a 6-2 run to trim the deficit to 22-21 forcing a timeout by the Hurricanes.
- After knotting the score at 22-22, the 'Canes recorded the frame's final three points to win it, 25-22.
- The third set was tight until Miami scored three consecutive points to take a 19-17 lead.
- After an NC State timeout, Miami won the next two rallies to pull ahead 21-17 and the Wolfpack could not recover in the set.
