NC State Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Win in Thriller at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The NC State volleyball team would not be denied Sunday afternoon, as the Wolfpack erased a 2-1 deficit and fought off match point twice to earn a 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22, 22-20) victory against the Florida State Seminoles in thrilling fashion inside Tully Gym.
NC State rallied from an 11-6 deficit in the fourth set to win it and force a decisive fifth set, after Florida State claimed the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the contest. The fifth set featured 11 ties, as the Wolfpack fought off two match-point opportunities and the Seminoles saved match point five times before NCSU converted to earn the win in the frame, 22-20.
With the win, the Wolfpack moves to 15-8 on the year and 10-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play to remain tied for first place in the league. Florida State falls to 12-8 and 6-6 in conference matches.
Records Broken
- Junior setter Kylie Pickrell broke the rally-scoring era program record with 70 assists in the match, the most by any player in the ACC and tied for the third most by any player among NCAA Division I this season.
- The Wolfpack's 78 team assists are also a rally-scoring era program record, most by any team in the conference and tied for the sixth most by any team in NCAA Division I this season.
- Additionally, NC State's 80 kills in the contest are a rally-scoring era program record, most by any team in the ACC and tied for the eighth most by any team in the NCAA this year.

Match Rewind
- NC State opened the match strong, as the squad raced out to a 7-2 lead in the opening frame after a service ace from Julia Brown to force a Florida State timeout.
- After grabbing a 23-22 lead after a kill from Brown, the Seminoles closed out the opening set with three consecutive points to win it, 25-23.
- Neither team led by more than a few points in the second set until FSU scored three straight points to grab an 18-15 lead, resulting in an NC State timeout.
- With Florida State leading 25-24, Teni Sopitan swatted a kill from the right side to spark a 3-0 run as NC State won the frame, 27-25.
- The Wolfpack fought off three set-point opportunities by the Seminoles at 24-22, 24-23 and again at 25-24 to earn the second-set win to even the match at one set apiece.
- NC State found itself an early hole in the third set and battled to work out of it, but was unable as Florida State won the frame, 25-20, to take a 2-1 lead.
- Trailing 13-8 in the fourth set, the Wolfpack scored eight consecutive points with Emily Harris at the service line to grab a 16-13 lead and force a Florida State timeout.
- The Seminoles narrowed the NC State advantage to 23-22, but Brown smacked a kill from the outside and a block assist from Kaitlyn Kearney and Sopitan followed to give the Pack the 25-22 set win.
- In the decisive fifth set, Brown and Sopitan swatted back-to-back kills to start the frame and give NC State a 2-0 lead.
- Tied at 13-13, Bree Bailey tallied a kill to give NCSU its first match point at 14-13 but a kill from FSU fought it off.
- The 'Noles had their first match-point attempt at 18-17, but a kill from Bailey following a timeout from the Pack knotted the score at 18.
- Florida State took a 19-18 lead in the frame, but a service error and an FSU attacking error gave NC State a 20-19 advantage.
- After a block from the Seminoles to even the set at 20-20, Bailey swatted a kill and Sopitan closed out the match and sealed the win with a kill from the right side.
Top Performers
- Bailey led all players in the contest with 24 kills, which matches her career high and is the most for the graduate student in an NC State uniform this season. She also logged a .327 hitting percentage.
- Brown smacked a season-high 23 kills and also recorded a .327 attacking percentage to go along with eight digs.
- Sopitan also turned in a stellar offensive match with 18 kills.
- At setter, Pickrell tallied a match-high 70 assists and also collected eight digs.
- Defensively, libero Emily Harris led the Wolfpack with 15 digs and Kassie Kasper pitched in with 10.
