RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team ended the 2017 regular season by stretching its unbeaten run to seven matches with a 0-0 draw against Boston College Friday evening at Dail Soccer Stadium. The draw marked NC State's seventh shutout of the season, as the Wolfpack (8-4-4, 3-3-2 ACC) has only conceded 17 goals in 16 matches.
Friday served as NC State's Senior Night, during which the program recognized the accomplishments and contributions of departing seniors Jan-Luca Ahillen, Ian Dowding (manager), Julius Duchscherer, Caleb Duvernay, Jake Dykes, Maximilian Luftl, and Roland Minogue.
NC State outshot Boston College (6-9-1, 1-6-1) by a 16-10 margin, but the Eagles were well organized defensively after starting goalkeeper Chavez Borrelli received a red card in the eighth minute, forcing his side to play down a man for 102 minutes. Borrelli was removed from the match after using his arm to prevent a dangerous backpass by one of his defenders from entering the net.
**Update: This decision was later rescinded by the ACC and officially changed on Tuesday, October 31.**
"I think any time a team has a red, that team is going to look to see if they can have us pick one up," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "I thought our guys managed that well. It allowed us to push guys a little bit further into the attack, because it took away one of their forwards.
"I'm really pleased with the guys because we got a shutout and we created some good chances."
Some of the most dangerous chances of the match came during the overtime periods. Freshman Manny Perez nearly won it in the 96th minute from close range, but his shot went narrowly high of the target. Just moments later in the 100th minute, Boston College's Callum Johnson hit the crossbar on an acrobatic volley.
The match nearly had a perfect finish for a Wolfpack senior on Senior Night, as Ahillen ripped a hard shot towards the target from 30 yards away during the final ten seconds of the second overtime period. Heading toward the inside of the far post, it was tipped just strong enough by BC goalkeeper Jack Bacon to ping off the upright as time expired.
For the first time in program history, NC State will host the first round of the 2017 ACC Men's Soccer Championship in Raleigh on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Hokies is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Stadium with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
"I think (hosting a tournament match) is a real testament to the group," Kiefer said. "I'm really pleased that we get that. I always like when Senior Night is not a team's last home game. I think we need to keep pushing and see if we can get more games at home when the ACC Tournament is over."
