Wolfpack Continues To Advance At ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team continued its strong showing at the ITA Carolina Regional at Cary Tennis Park Saturday. Juniors Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic reached the Round of 16 in singles and earned spots in the doubles Round of 16. Sophomore Alexis Galarneau and junior Michael Ogden also advanced, putting two Wolfpack pairs in the doubles Round of 16.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Igor and Ivan advanced to the Round of 16 after solid singles performances Saturday morning.
Ivan faced North Carolina Central's Gabriel Cucalon and beat him in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to secure a berth in the next round. Minutes later, his brother followed suit with a win of his own. Igor defeated Diego Quiroz of Winthrop 6-3, 6-3 to continue his run through the main draw.
Junior Michael Ogden and freshman Collin Shick also registered singles wins in the back draw. Ogden took down Coastal Carolina's Juan Castellanos 6-3, 6-3. On the court beside him, Shick earned his first career win 6-1, 6-4 against Ben Webster of Appalachian State.
In doubles, Ogden and Galarneau paired up to seek their first doubles victory of the season. They first faced Ronny Georgi and Vlad Anghel of ECU. The two dropped their first set 6-4 but came back to win the second set 6-2 and finished strong with a 10-5 score in the tiebreaker for the match. In the second round, Galarneau and Ogden won a quick 6-2, 6-1 decision against North Carolina Central's Gabriel Cucalon and Malays Konovalov.
Igor and Ivan also fought from behind in their first match against ECU's Will Bissett and Javier Reñones. The brothers lost the first set 6-2 and turned around to win the second set by the same score. They took the tiebreaker 10-8, sending them on to face Ladd Harrison and Anu Kodali of UNC. Igor and Ivan took that match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Malyshev and Shick put up great fights of their own in their first outing as doubles partners. First facing UNCA's Oli Nolan and Henry Patten, the Wolfpack pair held their composure and battled to a 5-7, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (7) win. Malyshev and Shick then faced Michael Morphy and Andres Torres of UNCW in an evening match under the lights in another tight matchup. The Wolfpack mounted a strong comeback after losing the first set 6-7 (3) and won the second set 6-2. It would yet again come down to a tiebreaker for the match, and UNCW held on to win it 10-6.
UP NEXT:
Tomorrow will mark a test for the Saveljic brothers, as Igor matches up against No. 28 Gabriel Friedrich. The South Carolina senior is the tournament's No. 2 seed. Ivan matches up against another South Carolina player in 84th-ranked Thomas Mayronne.
Galarneau and Ogden will face an ACC opponent in the doubles Round of 16. They take on Duke's Jason Lapidus and Catalin Mateas, marking the second time that Ogden has matched up against the duo this fall. Igor and Ivan will play Winthrop's Diego Quiroz and Ruy Teixeira.
In the back draw, Ogden will face Gardner Webb's Millen Hurrion, and Shick will play against Furman's Jake Munns.
SUNDAY'S SCHEDULE:
The Round of 16 for the singles main draw will be played Sunday morning, followed by a final round of back draw matches. Singles quarterfinals will begin play at 1:30 p.m. with the main draw of doubles continuing not before 2 p.m. Below are the scheduled start times for the Wolfpack's matches.
