RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team will begin its 2017 spring dual season Friday at 4 p.m. inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center against Old Dominion. It marks the team debut for the young squad, who posted an impressive fall season.
Horton, Galarneau Ranked by ITA:
Both Nick Horton and Alexis Galarneau were selected to the first ITA/Oracle singles poll of the spring season. Horton checked in at a team-high No. 37 to move up two spots from his fall ranking, while Alexis Galarneau will begin his freshman spring campaign ranked No. 103.
A Strong Fall:
The Wolfpack had a strong start to the 2016-17 season, earning 43 singles wins during the fall tournament season. Six members on the roster made fall debuts, while three true freshmen made collegiate debuts.
Horton led the way with seven wins, including four straight victories during his title run at the Wolfpack Invitational. Galarneau and Georgiy Malyshev picked up six wins during the fall, while every player on the roster posted a win percentage at or above .500.
Scouting ODU:
Old Dominion enters 2017 after posting a 21-4 record in 2016. The Monarchs are led by first-year head coach Dominik Mueller. The team returns five players from its 2016 lineup, including Adam Moundir, who is the team's top singles player and currently ranked No. 24 in the latest ITA poll. Old Dominion leads the overall series 12-11 and earned a 4-1 win over the Pack last year in Raleigh.
Debuts:
After six members of the team made fall debuts a few months ago, four Wolfpackers are set for their first spring dual season. The young team features three true freshmen and five sophomores.
Record Watch:
Nick Horton has won at least 20 matches in each of his first three years with the Pack. He's already up to 11th in school history in total singles wins with 72. Horton can move up the ranks in program history this season. His 73rd win will move him into a tie for 10th and his 75th win will move him into a tie for eighth place in all-time singles wins.
New Year, New Courts:
The Wolfpack recently finished a resurfacing project at the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Stadium to add new courts with new color to the arena.
