WILMINGTON, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team picked up its third win in a row with a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten UNCW. Goals from Jackie Stengel and Tziarra King sealed the win. The Wolfpack earned its first shutout of the year from a complete defensive effort behind goalie Sydney Wootten and the Wolfpack backline.
NC State improves to 4-2-0 with the win, while UNCW, which is currently receiving 28 votes in the NSCAA national coaches poll falls to 4-1-1 with its first defeat of the year.
The Pack recorded 10 shots during the contest and placed four on goal. NC State commanded time on the ball and built up possession before scoring each time to crack the tough UNCW defense.
Jackie Stengel scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the game winner. King added her third goal of the year and insurance for the Pack with a rocket from about 25 yards out.
Match Recap:
Throughout the first half, NC State dominated possession and worked to breakthrough a tough UNCW formation. The Pack was rewarded 17 minutes into the match, after Jackie Stengel leaped above the Seahawks' keeper and defenders to head home a cross from Kristina Schuster.
The goal was Stengel's fifth of the season and second in the last two matches, while Schuster picked up her third assist of the year and second in as many games.
NC State threatened throughout the half but didn't strike again in the opening 45 minutes.
The style continued into the second half, as NC State searched for an opening in the Seahawk's defense.
It came from an exceptional solo strike from King. The freshman found space on the left flank and dribbled towards the center before unleashing a perfect strike from about 25 yards out. The shot flew over the UNCW keeper and into the right side of the net.
The Pack closed out the match with strong play from its defensive unit. Wootteen made six saves overall, including four in the second half, while back line limited the Seahawks in time and space on the ball to earn the team's first shutout of the year.
