SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The NC State men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 61st annual Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, September 30th in South Bend, Indiana. The women will run a 5k race, while the men will race five miles. The meet will offer fast competition, and play an important role in the teams earning a bid to the NCAA Championships.
This will be the Wolfpack's second meet of the season, the first taking place two weeks ago at the adidas XC Challenge. The women, led by Erika Kemp, Rachel Koon and Megan Moye, finished in first place for the third consecutive year in a row, while the men placed second after a tiebreaker with Virginia. Aubrey Myjer, Ben Barrett and Patrick Sheehan represented the men's top three runners. NC State swept second place at last year's Notre Dame invitational, and will look to pack up and show depth again this time around.
Season Debuts:
Some of the teams' most experienced runners will make their season debut Friday, after resting through the adidas XC Challenge. Redshirt senior Kaitlyn Kramer and redshirt junior Alyssa Rudawsky will hit the course for the first time this year. Both ladies were members of the fifth place finishing NCAA team last year, and are expected to strongly impact the team again this season.
Redshirt junior Sebastain Hanson and redshirt senior Sam Parsons, who finished as the team's second and third runners, respectively, at last year's Notre Dame Invitational will race for the first time this year. Elijah Moskowitz and Philip Hall both competed in the adidas XC Challenge as unattached runners, but will don the NC State uniform for the first time this year on Friday.
Freshmen Forces:
True freshmen Elly Henes and Beth Taye are expected to make their Wolfpack debuts this weekend. Both ladies put up impressive times at the adidias XC Challenge as unattached runners two weeks ago to earn their spots on the travel squad, running 17:10.3 and 17:37.1, respectively.
The Competition:
The meet, held on Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course, will offer tough competition, as a number of nationally-ranked teams will be in attendance. On the women's side, NC State (No. 5) will take on six nationally-ranked teams, including Providence (No. 1) and New Mexico (No. 2--tie). Notre Dame (No. 16), Vanderbilt (No. 24--tie) and Utah (No. 28) round out the women's ranked opponents, with a number of additional teams who received votes in the national poll slated to compete, as well. The men, currently ranked in the 23rd spot, will take on seven top-30 teams, including Eastern Kentucky (No. 9) and Wisconsin (No. 12).
Meet Information:
Location: University Burke Golf Course
Start Times:
Women's Blue Division (5k) -- 2:00 p.m.
Men's Blue Division (5 miles) -- 2:45 p.m.
Open Race -- 3:30 p.m.
