Wolfpack Takes Down Panthers, 4-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team continued is offensive prowess with a 4-2 victory over High Point on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium. Jackie Stengel, Cailyn Boch, Michaella van Maanen and Ricarda Walkling tallied goals, while Walkling, Kristina Schuster and Tziarra King recorded assists.
The Wolfpack was dominant going forward, as it outshot High Point, 19-8 and placed 10 shots on target. NC State also held a, 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. The win snapped High Point's three match winning streak and was the first defeat the regionally-ranked Panthers have suffered this season. NC State moved to 3-2-0 with the win and High Point dropped to 3-1-1.
The Pack's offense is red-hot and averaging 2.8 goals per match through five contests. Overall, the team has scored 14 goals from seven different players and served up 13 assists throughout the season.
Santoro's Take:
"We've been attacking really well since the beginning of the season," said head coach Tim Santoro. "I think we will always be able to score goals and create chances. We were very sloppy defensively tonight so that's another part we have to clean up before Sunday. But four goals and a win and you never complain."
Match Recap:
It took only three minutes for the Wolfpack to find the scoreboard. Walkling and Stengel connected on a corner kick for the second time this season, as Stengel tapped in the corner from about six yards out to get the opening goal for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
High Point equalized 10 minutes later. Sydney Wooten made an acrobatic diving save to keep the first shot away. The ball rolled out to the left flank and was crossed in and then scored by the Panthers.
The two teams traded goals again just 11 minutes later. Boch and Schuster combined on the right side for a give and go. Schuster pulled the defended away, then passed it to Boch who slotted it past the keeper, as the Pack took its second lead of the night. The goal was Boch's first of the season and second of her career.
High Point came forward quickly off the restart and was given a penalty decision after a Wolfpack defender and High Point attacker collided in the box. The Panthers leveled the match again after a successful penalty kick.
NC State struck right before the halftime whistle with a goal in the 43rd minute. King sliced her way through the defense and down the right touchline before crossing the ball to van Maanen who struck the ball into the open side of the net. The goal proved to be the match-winner and van Mannen's second of the year.

After the half, the Pack continued its search for goals, and was awarded again in the 58th minute, as Walkling scored in her second consecutive match. The German placed her free kick from the left side on frame. The shot dropped over the keeper between a pair of High Point defenders then bounced into the back of the net for the Pack's fourth and final goal of the match.
NC State nearly scored again, as Kia Rankin hit the crossbar for the second time this season. Her shot from 35 yards out was inches from being on target in the 60th minute.
Along with the complete offensive performance, the Pack's defense held tight in the second half, allowing only three shots from High Point. In the midfield, Paige Griffiths and Taylor Porter went the full 90 minutes. Wootten also played a complete game in goal.
