
Wolfpack Drops Match to San Diego After Late Penalty

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team fell to San Diego, 1-0(2OT) after a late penalty call decided the match in overtime. NC State moves to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Toreros improve to 1-1-0.
 
NC State outshot San Diego 13-7 and placed five shots on goal. The Wolfpack also dominated possession for large stretches of the match and was anchored by a strong backline performance, but was unable to find the back of the net.
 
The deciding penalty call came after a collision in the box with both players attempting to win the ball. Goalkeeper Sydney Wootten guessed correctly on the penalty direction, but was unable to reach the well placed ball.

Despite the tough final result of the team's second match in three days, the young Wolfpack has opened the season with plenty of promise. Six freshmen have started two consecutive matches and nine freshmen have logged important minutes throughout both opening matches.
 
The Pack already has six goals and six assists. Freshmen have accounted for one goal and five of the team's assists.
 
NC State has also seen tremendous play from its backline. The group has protected the goal well, allowing only 3.5 shots on goal per match.
 
San Diego Match Recap:
From the opening whistle, NC State was creative in the attack. The Pack produced several chances during the first half from steady build up play. In the 14th minute, Kia Rankin almost put NC State ahead, as her shot slapped the crossbar.
 
The Pack's backline of Hannah Keogh, Cailyn Boch, Ella Bonner and Kristina Schuster neutralized the Torero attack for the entire first half, blocking two of their three shots.
 
Late in the half, San Diego survived a flurry of Wolfpack chances, as Michaella van Maanen fired a shot over the bar and Paige Griffiths had a shot saved.
 
After the half, NC State was continually dangerous going forward. The Pack added 10 shots, including four on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net.
 
With four minutes left in the contest, Wooten came up big for the Pack and produced a diving save to keep the score level and send the match to overtime.
 
In overtime, the Pack continued to press. It created a handful of late chances before San Diego went forward to receive and convert a penalty in the 101st minute of play.
