Franken Begins 116th U.S. Amateur Monday

RALEIGH – Rising sophomore Stephen Franken of the NC State men's golf team prepares to compete at the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship beginning Monday. The tournament will be played from August 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

Franken earned a spot at the event by winning a qualifying tournament at Willowbrook Country Club. The Raleigh native finished six strokes under par with a final score of 136. Franken defeated his nearest competitor by three strokes.

On Monday and Tuesday, 312 qualifiers will compete in 36 holes of stroke play. Eighteen holes will be played on the North Course and 18 holes will be played on the South Course. The players with the lowest 64 scores will advance to match play. Wednesday through Saturday will feature the best 64 players going head-to-head in single elimination match play on the South Course until just two remain. The two finalists will then compete in a 36-hole showdown on "The Monster" to determine the 116th U.S. Amateur champion.
