Stephen Franken Wins Medalist Honors at North & South Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. – Rising sophomore Stephen Franken of the NC State men's golf team continued his terrific summer this week by claiming medalist honors at the 116th Men's North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2.

Franken shot a two-round score of 139 (-1) to defeat the nearest competitor by three strokes. He recorded an even-par score of 70 during the first round before sinking three birdies and one eagle his second time through the course to ultimately finish with a 69 (-1).

This impressive tournament title comes just a few days after Franken shot a three-round score of 282 (-6) at the 2016 N.C. Amateur Championship to take third place.

Franken's future teammate—Benjamin Shipp, who will be a freshman during the 2016-17 season—finished seventh in the field (146, +6) and advanced to the match play phase of the competition.
