NC State baseball let a marvelous Brian Brown pitching performance go to waste on Saturday
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - No. 17 NC State baseball fell 5-3 to No. 14 Virginia on Saturday at Davenport Field, evening the series one game apiece ahead of Sunday's finale.
The Wolfpack (18-9, 4-5 ACC) let an unearned run cross in the fifth, and took that 1-0 deficit two outs into the eighth. Virginia (18-10, 6-5) mounted a four-run, two-out rally following Brian Brown's depature. The Pack fought valiantly in the ninth, scoring three and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but a fly to right set the final 5-3.
Brian Brown (3-1) pitched a career-long 7 2/3 innings with only three hits allowed and five strikeouts, the unearned fifth-inning run a lone blemish. Brown left the game after 103 pitches, opening the door for the Cavaliers' critical rally. Cody Beckman faced five batters before Chris Williams induced the final out on a foul pop.
Joe Dunand tied a career high set this year against Indiana State with three singles, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Brock Deatherage doubled in a 2-for-4 outing with an RBI, extending his reached base streak to 22 games. Stephen Pitarra provided the Pack's other RBI in a 1-for-3 performance with two walks, marking the third game in a row he's led off with a walk.
Brett Kinneman doubled for the second time this year and scored once to spark the Wolfpack's ninth-inning comeback bid after entering the game as a pinch runner. Kinneman replaced Xavier LeGrant, who singled in his lone at-bat as a pinch hitter.
