RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 42 NC State men's tennis team will host No. 43 Notre Dame in a crucial final match of the regular season Sunday at 12 pm at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The match is senior day for major contributors Simon Norenius and Thomas Weigel and has big implications for both teams in terms of ACC Championships and NCAA final rankings.
Splendid Seniors:
For the last four years, Weigel and Norenius have been major components to the team's success both as individuals and as a doubles team. Both have moved from the middle of the lineup to the top and hold national rankings in singles play this season. The pair has also become a force as a doubles team and moved into the rankings after knocking off two-straight ranked opponents.
Weigel has etched his name into the All-Time records during his time at NC State with consistent play over his four years with the Pack. He is currently sixth in school history in both singles and doubles all-time wins. He has 85 singles victories and 63 doubles wins. Weigel is also having one the best spring seasons in school history and is quickly closing in on the school record of 23 dual wins in a single season. He only needs two more singles victories to clinch the record. Weigel has spent three of his four years with the Pack in the national singles rankings.
Norenius has been a cornerstone of program during his four years at NC State. Norenius is up to 74 career singles victories – good for 9th in school history and 48 doubles wins which rank 11th in school history. This season, Norenius has moved up to the top of the lineup. He is ranked 49th in the nation and has a team-leading 24 wins. He has also defeated 6 nationally ranked opponents. This is his second consecutive year in the national rankings and his third straight year with at least 20 wins.
