The three-day meet will be hosted by Georgia Tech
RALEIGH- Gabi McDermott, Harrison Mitchell and Rachel Mumma of the NC State swimming and diving team will represent the Wolfpack at the 2016 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, hosted by Georgia Tech Monday through Wednesday inside the McAuley Aquatic Center.
All three divers will aim to earn spots at the NCAA Championships, which will also be held in Atlanta. The women's championship will run March 16-19 while the men's will be held March 23-26.
Competition each day will begin at 11 a.m. Live results can be found at DiveMeets.com.
Radman's Recap
"It's going to be a very interesting meet that will provide our team with a lot of great competition, as we compete in one of the deepest zones with several strong ACC and SEC schools in the mix," said head coach Yahya Radman.
"Rachel has a great shot at qualifying in all three events but will by no means be a cake walk, while Harrison and Gabi will give us a tremendous asset to what our team can do this week. We'll look to take what we did a few weeks ago and use that momentum towards qualifying for NCAAs this week.
"The kids are excited for the challenge, and they feel comfortable competing in Georgia Tech's pool. We enjoy competing in Atlanta which makes this opportunity even more exciting, and we're looking forward to taking that next step towards meeting our goal of contributing diving points at NCAAs."
Qualification Process
The new qualification format for each NCAA Zone Diving meet has allowed more divers to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. One of the easiest ways to think about it is in terms of former swimming terminology- `A' cuts and `B' cuts.
During the season, divers must score a certain mark to be invited to NCAA Zones. At each zone, divers must qualify for their invitation to the national championships.
Each of the NCAA's five zones earn a different amount of invite slots, based on how that zone's divers did at last year's NCAAs. The invites are determined by:
-Each zone is guaranteed five women's spots per event and four men's spots per event. (`A' cut)
-Zones earn bonus spots on top of those five/four based on last year's results. (`A' cut)
-Any eligible diver can compete in any of the three diving events at NCAAs, provided he/she earns one of the invitation spots and places top-12 in the other two events at that Zone. (`B' cut)
