GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State women's basketball team (20-11) saw its ACC Tournament journey come to an end in the quarterfinal round Friday evening, falling to No. 17 Syracuse by a final score of 80-61.
Trailing 34-28 at halftime, NC State used a 9-1 run at the beginning of the third quarter to take a 37-35 lead with 7:13 remaining in the period. Five three-pointers by the Orange over the next 2:12 turned the tide in Syracuse's favor, giving the tournament's No. 3 seed a 50-41 lead it would not relinquish throughout the rest of the contest.
"Just too many turnovers that led to points," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference with the assembled media. "I think they scored 29 points off turnovers, and we just didn't handle it very well. Before when we played them (on February 14), we had a couple of days to prepare, so today we didn't have that with the quick turnaround and we just didn't do a good job against the press.
"Syracuse did a great job of attacking. They got us into some foul trouble. They were able to get to the rim, and then (Brianna) Butler obviously was very, very good, especially in the first half."
Miah Spencer led all players with 22 points on 5-10 shooting and a 12-15 success rate from the free-throw stripe. She was joined in double figures by 14 points from Jennifer Mathurin and 12 from Chelsea Nelson.
As a team, Syracuse shot 12-27 (.439) from long range and had five players score in double figures. Alexis Peterson led the team with 18 points while Brianna Butler was not far behind with 17 on 5-10 shooting from distance.
Trailing 21-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Wolfpack shot 6-12 (.500) from the field during the second to shrink the Syracuse lead to six points (34-28) by the halftime break. Nelson had a strong second quarter for NC State, scoring seven points on 3-6 shooting during the period. The first half proved problematic in terms of foul counts for NC State, as Dominique Wilson (three fouls) and Spencer (two) found themselves in foul trouble during the opening 20 minutes.
After achieving 20 wins (10 in the ACC) and a tie for fifth place in the league regular-season standings, the Wolfpack will await its postseason destination. The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship bracket will be announced Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
