Junior Tyler Ross tallies her first multi-home run game this season
RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Tyler Ross clubbed a pair of home runs and matched her career best with five runs batted in (RBI) to lead the NC State softball team to an 8-0 run-rule victory against USC Upstate Wednesday afternoon at Dail Stadium.
NC State moves to 16-18 on the season, while USC Upstate falls to 28-8. The Spartans are currently receiving votes in the USA Softball/ESPN.com top-25 poll.
Rychcik's Review
Opening statement…
"I'm real pleased with all aspects of the game today," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "I'm really happy with our energy today, how we jumped on them early and never let up, so I'm really happy with how we played today.
"I think we were really focused today and intentional about what we wanted to do at the plate and in the circle. A lot of credit to our players for coming out today and attacking."
On Courtney Mirabella's performance today…
"She kept the ball off the center of the bat really well today with good velocity and good movement. They're a good team and they've played well this year with a good record. They came in with a team batting average of .318 and we limited them to one hit, so she was really good today."
The Rundown
- NC State struck first in the contest, as Ross led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to right center to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
- Hanna Sommer added to NC State's advantage with a solo homer two batters later to put the Pack ahead, 2-0.
- After Lana Van Dyken started the Wolfpack second with a single and Macauley Prickett reached on an error, Ross left the yard for the second time on the day with a three-run blast to left field, stretching NC State's lead to 5-0.
- The Cameron, N.C., native batted for the third time in as many innings in the bottom of the third and lined an RBI single up the middle to plate Alyssa Compton from second base.
- Maggie Hawkins joined the home run parade in the fourth inning with a two-run shot to center field, as NC State extended its lead to 8-0.
Quick Hits
- Ross led the Wolfpack at the plate with a pair of round-trippers to register her ACC-leading 12th and 13th home runs. She was also a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, to go along with five RBI and two runs scored.
- Compton, Hawkins, Prickett, Sommer and Van Dyken had one hit each in the contest.
- Brittany Case had the lone hit for USC Upstate.
In the Circle
- Courtney Mirabella went the distance in the circle for NC State tossing a one-hitter, which came in the fourth inning on a ground ball up the middle.
- She did not allow a runner to reach third base against USC Upstate's high-powered offense, which averaged 6.23 runs per game entering the contest.
- Mirabella picked up her 10th win of the season, while Holly McKinnon took the loss for Upstate pitching 1.1 innings allowing five runs to drop her record to 17-4.
Quoting the Players
Courtney Mirabella, Jr., P
"I felt really good today in warm-ups and I just wanted to carry that momentum over to the game to continue to make good pitches and stay sharp. I've been working on being more consistent in practice and I was able to jam their hitters inside and then mix things up with my changeup."
Tyler Ross, Jr., OF
"I think we came out today with an aggressive attitude and were very relaxed, which helped us play so well. We need to come out the same way we did today against Pitt this weekend and hopefully we'll have a similar result."
Game Notes
- NC State, which leads the ACC and is ranked eighth in the NCAA in home runs, hit four homers for just the second time this season, which matches the season high.
- Ross tallied her first multi-home run game of the year and first since March 8, 2015 against Notre Dame.
- Mirabella's one hit allowed is the fewest in a game this season for opponents.
- The Wolfpack moves to 4-1 in the all-time series against the Spartans.
On Deck
NC State returns to action at home this weekend when the Pittsburgh Panthers visit Dail Stadium for a conference series. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. and Sunday's single game will begin at noon.
