Â
The Wolfpack began strong Sunday afternoon as Amanda Rebol and Claudia Wiktorin clinched the doubles point for the Pack in a 6-3 decision over Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar. Prior to the duo's deciding win, Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta captured a 6-3 victory over Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford at the No. 1 doubles.
Â
No. 63 Frantova found great success in the Wolfpack-Hokies matchup as she captured her second consecutive straight-set win over a nationally-ranked opponent. Frantova collected a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over No. 45 Quinn Gleason of Notre Dame Thursday evening prior to defeating No. 51 Francesca Fusinato of Virginia Tech 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) Sunday afternoon. Frantova is 9-6 at the No. 1 singles spot with all nine wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
Â
SIMON SAYS:
"Prior to the match we talked about having opportunities to win the doubles point. That's been a challenge for us so far and today it just happened. If you try and play a certain way for long enough that generally will happen in the current form. My concern, even yesterday, was what was going to happen if we do win that doubles point. Are we going to be happy after recent results and get a little carried away from the consistency we've been working on this year?
Â
"I felt that the difference in this match was experience. Virginia Tech is a much more experienced team and played more composed than we did. At the top of the lineup we did a good job but we're still trying to fight for that level of consistency and unfortunately, our younger players just weren't able to bring that today. It's been a bit out of character this spring but we've been aware of what we need to work and I know that the girls are disappointed with today's outcome. We've got to come back and work harder at it as well as keep working at the things where we are being productive." – Simon Earnshaw, head coach
Â
The Pack continues its ACC slate on the road when it returns to action April 3 at Pittsburgh before traveling to rival North Carolina April 6.
